Pays de la Loire is located between southern Brittany and northern Poitou Charentes, on the western side of France and it is cut from east to west by the Loire River. The Loire Valley is central to the region's economy and its cultural and educational activities and has been declared a "cultural landscape of exceptional beauty" by UNESCO. The coastline west of Nantes includes the Jade Coast and the Cote d'Amour. The island of Noirmoutier falls within the Vendée department. The Vendee beaches are long, and gently sloping, perfect for children, windsurfing and birdwatching, and often backed by pine forests. Resorts include Saint-Jean-de-Monts; Saint Gilles Croix-de-Vie; Les Sables d'Olonne and Tranche-sur-Mer. The Marais Poitevin, or Green Venice, is a peaceful area of marsh and waterways, whilst Vouvant is classified as a Petite Cité de Caractére.
